Knit Your Own Cornish Gansey: Ten-Part Course (2023)

‘Keeping Tradition Alive’

STARTING Thursday 19th JANUARY 2023

During the 17th and 18th centuries the traditional fisherman’s gansey was the working garment of the day for Cornish fishermen. Right up until the 1920’s it was common for knitters around Cornwall to be contracted to knit this style of sweater which often contained stitch patterns particular to certain villages or families. In the 1970’s Mary Wright realised that many of these patterns which had passed down the generations via word of mouth were beginning to disappear. Mary undertook a huge research project, travelling up and down Cornwall talking to as many knitters as she could find to capture these patterns. Mary documented her findings in the book Cornish Guernseys and Knit-Frocks which has now become the go to reference for Cornish Ganseys.

This workshop course is run simultaneously In-Person (at Truro Wool) and On-line via Zoom. So whether you wish to join a traditional in-person workshop or from the comfort of your home you can be sure you will receive expert tuition and advice every step of the way from cast on to cast off.
