Over the course of this two-day weekend workshop, your experienced tutor, Julie Cowan, will guide you through every step of making your first Interwoven Cowl – from warping, through weaving, interweaving weft and warp, along with the all important finishing.

These cleverly designed cowls are woven in one piece – as you approach the end of the weaving, the cloth is removed from the loom and the end of the cloth is woven to the beginning of the cloth to form a continuous fabric that creates the characteristic ‘V’ front with cowl neck line.

These cowls are a great ‘next step’ project for those that have mastered direct warping using a warping peg and basic plain weave. This project progesses your skills from simple scarves and basic fabric to a desirable wearable straight off the loom. You will receive a warping draft detailing your warping sequences to produce a striped and checkered effect cowl as per pale blue version featured in the pictures (Colour Lab shades used – main colour Sky Blue (1136), contrast colour 1 Artic White (011), contrast colour 2 Soft Stone (1204).

This technique lead workshop will be transferrable across differing fabric weights and these options will be discussed during the workshop so that you can go on to create your own designs.

The workshop includes 400g of West Yorkshire Spinners ColourLab DK pure British wool across 3 shades (200g of main colour, 100g of two contrast colours). If you know the colours you would like to use at the time of booking your place, feel free to tell us your selection using the Customer Order Notes section on the checkout page. Otherwise feel free to pop into the shop anytime before the workshop to select your three colours (09:30-16:30, Mon-Sat).

The workshop also includes use of one of our Ashford Knitters Looms, however if you own your own loom, you are very welcome to bring that along to the workshop to use if you prefer. You will need a minimum 12″ wide loom along with a 7.5 dpi reed, shuttle, reed hook, warping peg and a 10mm diameter piece of wooden dowel the same width as your loom.

The workshop has been timed so that as long as you weave at a consistently moderate pace, you will leave the workshop with a completed Interwoven Cowl.
