A Two-Day Introduction to the Art of Weaving
10:00 – 16:00 on Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th August 2025

Whether you’re curious about weaving or already own a rigid-heddle loom and want to learn how to use it, this comprehensive weekend course is the perfect starting point. Across two full-day sessions, you’ll be guided through the fundamentals of Rigid Heddle Loom weaving, building confidence and hands-on experience from the ground up.

The workshop includes use of one of our Ashford Knitters Looms, however if you own your own loom, you are very welcome to bring that along to the workshop to use if you prefer.

Led by Julie Cowan, Truro Wool’s expert tutor and experienced weaver, you’ll be creating beautiful pieces of fabric from your very first session.

  • Day 1:
    Get to know the Loom, common weaving terminology, direct warp the loom, plain weave a broad stripe placemat with Hemstitch Finishing
  • Day 2:
    Direct warp a Loom with a multi-coloured 2×2 warp calculating how much yarn each shade will require, how to change Weft colour, experiment with colours and finish your second placemat. Plus theory on how to create a Plaid design.

Included in this workshop will be all the 100% Double Knit Cotton yarn required for the two days. A selection of colours will be available for you to choose from at the start of the first day.

Introduction to Rigid Heddle Loom Weaving

This workshop is ideal for anyone interested in learning to weave. Spanning two full-day sessions held on two consecutive days, Truro Wool’s expert tutor and experienced weaver, Julie Cowan, will guide you through every step needed to create beautiful fabrics using a Rigid Heddle Loom.

The Rigid Heddle Loom is the perfect loom to step into the wonderful world of weaving, from plain weave to plaid to Houndstooth the possibilities are endless. By making two placemats across this mini course you will learn how the interaction between warp and weft work and will give you all the skills you need to go away confident to plan and execute your own projects.

Included:

  • 2 x 6 hour workshops
  • 100% Cotton yarn required for the workshop projects (choice of colours available at the start of the first day)
  • Use of Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom
    • The workshop includes use of one of our Ashford Knitters Looms, however if you own your own loom, you are very welcome to bring that along to the workshop to use if you prefer. You will need a minimum 16″ wide loom along with a 10 dpi reed, boat shuttle/shuttle stick, reed hook, warping peg.

  • Understanding a Rigid Heddle Loom and all the common weaving terms from ‘epi’ to ‘shed’ and lots more
  • How to Warp a Loom using the Direct Warping Method
  • Understanding how to achieve the correct ‘sett’ and a ‘balanced weave’
  • Weaving using a variety of shuttles
  • How to maintain a neat selvedge
  • Hem Stitch
  • 2 Different designs to demonstrate the variety that can be achieved with a Rigid Heddle Loom
  • How to plan and calculate for a project
  • Finishing Techniques for your fabric

  • This workshop is limited to a maximum of 8 participants.

Cancellation Policy:

  • If your circumstances change and you are unable to attend a workshop you have booked, please let us know as soon as possible. A 90% refund will be given if the cancellation is made more than 28 days in advance of the start of your workshop (10% is required to cover administrative costs incurred). Unfortunately, no refund can be given on cancellations made within 28 days of the start of the workshop, however, we would be willing to swap your booking over to another name, should you have a friend or family member that would wish to attend in your place.
  • Please be advised that if you miss one of the parts of this course, we cannot offer a catch-up session, however, please speak to us about booking a 1-2-1 session as we will, of course, do our best to assist you.
  • This workshop requires a minimum of 4 participants to run.
  • Very rarely circumstances beyond our control may mean that workshops must be cancelled. Should this happen, the cost of your workshop will be fully refunded.
