During the 17th and 18th centuries, the traditional fisherman’s gansey served as the essential workwear for Cornish fishermen. Knitted with 5-ply yarn on a close gauge tension, these garments were crafted using techniques unique to gansey-making. As detailed in Mary Wright’s book Cornish Guernseys and Knit-Frocks, families and villages along the Cornish coast often personalised their ganseys with distinctive yoke stitch patterns.
In this focused 3.5-hour workshop, experienced tutor Julie Cowan will delve into the history of this iconic jumper, explaining all the techniques and their special place in these hard wearing garments. Whether you wish to adopt one of the Traditional Cornish stitches or to create your own family pattern, Julie will guide you through the end to end process from getting started to finishing your own beautiful gansey.
